For years, mechanical watches were getting bigger, even grew beyond the 50 millimeters and spread in women's wrists also in men's sizes. But the trend is now in the other direction again. Nobody will be surprised by the fact that brands that value their tradition offer watches in temperate sizes - but the models of the 1930s to the 1960s, which today are regarded as classics, measure less than 39 millimeters in diameter. But there are also dainty sports watches that are not just for the ladies. Here are seven watches that are smaller than 39 millimeters. 

Wristwatch smaller than 39 mm # 1: A. Lange & Sohne Saxonia automatic

A. Lange & Söhne offers a broad portfolio of smaller, more elegant timepieces. In autumn 2017, the Saxonia automatic with blue dial was added. The manufacture caliber L086.1 with automatic winding drives three rhodium-plated gold hands. It is protected by a 38.5 mm white gold case. The Saxonia costs in this version 22,800 euros.

Wristwatch Less Than 39 mm # 2: Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Automatic

Even the first Royal Oak by Audemars Piguet was 38.8 millimeters in diameter by today's standards not particularly large. Currently there is an even smaller version in 37 millimeters with the Royal Oak automatic . The striking case is made of stainless steel, in which the manufacture caliber 3120 works with automatic winding . It drives three hands as well as a date. Especially nice here: the date dial adapts in color to the dial with the typical tapestry decor. Currently, this Royal Oak costs 16,600 euros.

In 2017,  Blancpain debuted  the  Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe  for the first time in the smaller 38-millimeter stainless steel case in an unlimited model. In addition, in the attractive dial color dark blue. The ceramic scale of the one-sided rotating immersion bezel is also made of blue ceramic. Despite the retro look, the watch is good for diving because it is pressure resistant to 30 bar. The  manufacture caliber 1150  with automatic winding  can be viewed through the sapphire crystal caseback. It builds up a long power reserve of 100 hours. The spiral spring made of silicon better withstands shocks and magnetic fields. With a canvas strap, the diver's watch costs 8,810 euros.

Hublot is known for its eye-catching watches made from innovative materials. The Classic Fusion Ceramic Black Magic , despite its small size of only 38 millimeters in diameter. The case is made of black ceramic and the black dial is made of carbon fiber. On it circle three pointers, which like the date at three o'clock are driven by the automatic caliber SW 300-1 of the Sellita . The three-hand watch is fixed with a black rubber strap. The price: 7,800 euros.

The Max Bill by Junghans has been a classic among wristwatches since the 1960s. Even the first models measured only 34 millimeters in diameter, which was absolutely contemporary for men at the time. To this day Junghans leads this small clock in the program, in addition to the traditional white and fashionable colorful versions. In gray with a felt-leather strap, it is in color appealing to men, the size of 34 millimeters, however, requires a little more self-confidence today. The manual winding caliber Eta 2801-2 works inside the stainless steel case . The Max Bill manual wind costs 625 euros.

Wristwatch less than 39 mm # 6: Longines Record

For its 185th anniversary in 2017,  Longines launched  a new men's and women's collection. The  Record  is a simple three-hand watch with date in sizes 26, 30, 38.5 and 40 millimeters. The men have six dials to choose from, the women even seven. All models are powered by an automatic movement of the Eta. The  automatic Eta A31.L11 ticks in the 38.5-millimeter version with silicon spiral, which is awarded by the COSC as a chronometer. Thanks to the transparent case back of the stainless steel housing, the wearer can watch the movement at work. You also have to decide on a bracelet: an alligator leather strap in black or brown and a stainless steel strap that gently emerges from the case. The cost is in any case at 1,990 euros.

Nomos Glashütte belongs to those watch manufacturers who have not gone along with the trend towards ever larger wristwatches. The clocks of the German manufactory rarely exceed 40 millimeters. A classic among them is the tangent. It is currently available with a silver-colored dial that carries a horizontal cut. As a tangent neomatik 39 silvercut , it measures 38.5 millimeters in diameter, works with the automatic manufactory caliber DUW 3001 and costs 2,880 euros.
